The SAT Reasoning Test

The SAT Reasoning Test (formerly the Scholastic Assessment Test) is:

  • A standardized, multiple-choice test
  • An admissions or placement requirement for most U.S. colleges and universities
  • Often used to determine scholarship awards
  • Governed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS)

There are seven sections to the SAT Reasoning Test. The section order and contents differ each time the test is administered.

  • Three verbal
  • Three mathematical
  • One experimental

The experimental section:

  • Is used by the ETS for research
  • Can be verbal or math
  • Will not be counted towards your final score

Why is the SAT Reasoning Test important?

Florida requires students to take admissions or placement tests before entering a program. The test you take depends on the program you want to enter. You should take the SAT test if you:

  • Are entering a college credit program (working towards an A.A. or A.S. degree)
  • Have not taken the ACT or CPT tests

I`ve already taken the SAT Reasoning Test. How do I make sure SCC receives my scores?

You are responsible for making sure SCC has your SAT records.

  • If you are entering SCC directly from high school, speak with your high school guidance counselor. Some schools will include your SAT scores with your high school transcripts.
  • Speak with the institution where you took the SAT Reasoning Test. You may be able to have them send your scores to SCC.
  • Contact the SAT's governing board at www.ets.org or 800-728-7267.
  • Speak with the SCC Admissions department.
  • Contact the Assessment and Testing Center at 407.708.2020.

NOTE: If your SAT scores are more than two years old, you will have to take the CPT exam.

What should I do if I want to retake the SATs?

Most people retake the SATs to improve their scores. If you are concerned about your scores you may:

  • Retake the exam at SCC's Assessment and Testing Center. The EST administers SAT exams seven times a year. Contact the Assessment and Testing Center, or visit www.ets.org for exam dates and registration deadlines.
  • Replace your SAT test with the CPT exam. The CPT meets the state`s admission requirement for entering a college-credit program.

What should I do if I haven`t taken the SAT Reasoning Test?

If you have not taken the SAT, you can:

  • Complete an SAT registration packet, available in the SCC Assessment and Testing Center or any high school guidance department. The ETS administers SAT exams seven times a year. Contact the Assessment and Testing Center, or visit www.ets.org for exam dates and registration deadlines.
  • Take the ACT or CPT exams instead. Both exams will meet the state`s admission requirement for entering a college-credit program.
