New Directions: Displaced Homemaker Program

Empower Yourself through Education and Training.

New Directions is a state grant-funded program that is sponsored by the Agency for Workforce Innovation. The goal of this program is to assist the displaced homemakers, single parents or single pregnant women who attend Seminole Community College to attain independence, economic security and self-sufficiency.

Women This program offers qualified students assistance with tuition, books, childcare stipends, uniforms, equipment, educational program-related expenses and consideration for emergency assistance.

New Directions can empower students to:
  • Establish their independence.
  • Build their self-confidence.
  • Become self-sufficient.
  • Become economically secure.
  • Transition from one role to another.
  • Enter the job market confidently and competitively.

Who Qualifies for the New Directions Program?

1. Displaced Homemakers: To be considered for assistance, applicants must meet the indicated criteria and provide proof that they:

  • Are at least 35 years old.
  • Have worked in a home, providing unpaid household services for family members.
  • Are not adequately employed or earning a self-sufficient income.
  • Have had or would have difficulty in securing adequate employment.
  • Have been dependent on the income of another family member but are no longer supported by such income.
  • Have been dependent on federal assistance.
2. Single Parents or Single Pregnant Women: To be considered for assistance, applicants must provide proof that they have custody of one or more child, of their marital status and of their educational background, as well as meet the following criteria:
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 34.
  • Applicants must seek a degree/certificate in a non-traditional career for their gender.
