File Servers

File servers are specialized computers designed to work on and for a network. In most cases these computers are high end computers with large amounts of memory and disk space. The college has multiple servers that service the instructional and administrative areas of the college.

The servers provide services to workstations (desktop computers) by enabling the workstation to share in network resources such as files, printers, and storage. The network provides security by ensuring users only access those resources that have been permitted.

Security Overview

The purpose of computer security is to protect college network resources by validating users and their individual access permissions.

CTS ensures security by regulating access to the network system, applications and other network resources. Access to the network system is controlled by the use of a personal login ID and password. Once an individual is given an ID and password they may access the network. Once on the network, further security is provided by regulating what resources the individual may access. For example, individual X is now on the network but can not print to a certain printer. This access is given on an individual by individual basis as is all network resources such as e-mail, applications such as word processing or spreadsheets.

Acquiring System and Application Access

SCC employees may acquire system and application access by completing the CTS User Access Request . The form must be signed by the appropriate Department Head, Dean, Director or Vice-President and submitted to the Department of Computing and Telecommunication Services . When submitting the request for applications that require application access control, such as Accounting, Division of Community Colleges, Electronic Transcripts, Human Resource, Student, please include a list of components, screens you wish to use for each application.
